Rail communication on several northern routes was suspended on Wednesday after multiple coaches of the Nilsagar Express derailed near Tilakpur station, between Santahar in Bogura and Akkelpur in Joypurhat.
The Dhaka-bound train, numbered 765 and heading towards Chilahati, went off the tracks with at least seven coaches, according to railway officials and eyewitness accounts.
The accident occurred on a single-line section, immediately halting train movement on the route.
As a result, services connecting Santahar with Chilahati, Panchagarh and Saidpur have been suspended, causing significant disruption to passengers, particularly those travelling ahead of the Eid holidays. The train was reportedly carrying a large number of homebound passengers at the time of the incident.
Initial reports indicate that several passengers sustained injuries, although the exact number and severity were not immediately confirmed. Local residents and railway staff rushed to the scene to assist those affected and help with preliminary rescue efforts.
Railway authorities said the derailment caused substantial damage to both the coaches and the track, making restoration work challenging.
Officials warned that clearing the wreckage and repairing the line could take considerable time before services return to normal.
Passengers planning to travel on northern routes have been advised to consider alternative modes of transport as crews work to restore rail connectivity. Meanwhile, an investigation is expected to be launched to determine the cause of the derailment.
