The government has assigned Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the alternate in charge of handling the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)-related parliamentary affairs in the Jatiya Sangsad in the absence of the Prime Minister.
The decision was formalised through a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Tuesday. The notification, signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will continue to perform all responsibilities related to the Prime Minister’s Office in the 13th National Parliament.
However, in situations where the Prime Minister is unable to be present in the House, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will carry out the responsibilities with parliamentary business on behalf of the Prime Minister. The arrangement is aimed at ensuring the smooth continuation of legislative activities and maintaining coordination between the government and parliament.
Officials said such provisions are part of administrative measures to avoid any disruption in parliamentary activities, especially during the Prime Minister’s absence due to official engagements or other commitments.
The notification also mentioned that the order takes immediate effect, underscoring the government’s intent to streamline parliamentary functions under the current administration.
Observers note that the move reinforces the role of senior cabinet members in supporting the Prime Minister in legislative affairs while ensuring continuity in governance.
