Road Transport, Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam on Wednesday said public transport services across the country are operating in line with government-approved fares ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, ensuring a relatively smooth and hassle-free journey for passengers.

The minister made the remarks after inspecting Gabtali Bus Terminal in the capital, where he reviewed passenger services, ticketing practices and overall management during the Eid rush.

He said most transport operators are adhering to the fixed fare structure, while in some cases passengers are even being charged slightly less than the approved rates.

“So far, we have not received any major complain regarding overcharging. Buses are leaving on schedule and passengers are not facing significant inconvenience,” he added.

To maintain discipline and prevent irregularities, authorities have set up police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) control rooms, along with special vigilance teams, at major terminals including Gabtali. Fare charts have also been displayed prominently to allow passengers to verify official rates and avoid being overcharged.

The minister urged passengers to report any complain immediately, assuring that strict action is being taken against violators.

He cited recent fines imposed on transport operators in areas such as Nabinagar and Baipayl for overcharging passengers.

Addressing concerns over fuel supply, he said adequate fuel has been ensured since 15 March, with no shortages reported so far.

He also noted a significant rise in Eid travel, mentioning that around 32,000 additional vehicles crossed the Jamuna Bridge recently, reflecting increased pressure on highways ahead of the festival.
