The government of Bangladesh has initiated efforts to bring back its citizens who are currently stranded in conflict-affected areas of Iran, officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Wednesday.
According to officials, several hundred Bangladeshi nationals who wish to return home will be repatriated under the special operation, which is expected to begin on Thursday, 19 March, pending completion of logistical arrangements.
As part of the initial phase, approximately 200 Bangladeshis are scheduled to return to Dhaka. They will first travel by road from Iran to the Azerbaijani border and then be flown to the capital on a special chartered flight departing from Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has deployed senior officials to ensure the operation runs smoothly.
M Amanul Haq, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Turkey, is travelling to Azerbaijan to supervise the repatriation process. Additionally, two ministry officials left Dhaka on Tuesday night to assist on the ground in Baku.
Officials emphasised that the government is taking all necessary measures to guarantee the safety and well-being of returning citizens throughout the journey. The repatriation effort comes amid growing concern for the welfare of Bangladeshi nationals caught in the escalating conflict in Iran, where safety and security risks have risen sharply.
The Foreign Ministry further urged citizens in the region to stay in touch with Bangladeshi diplomatic missions and follow instructions to facilitate their safe return.
