Bangladesh’s National Moon Sighting Committee is set to meet on Thursday evening to determine the official date of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most significant religious festivals for Muslims in the country.

The meeting will take place at 6:00 pm at the conference room of the Bangladesh Islamic Foundation (BIF), located within the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque complex in Dhaka. Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Houssain Kaikobad is expected to chair the session, according to an official statement.

Committee members will assess reports of the Shawwal crescent moon from across the country, which will determine whether Eid will be observed the following day or after an additional day of fasting. The decision will be announced after verifying sightings in line with established religious and administrative procedures.

Authorities have called on the public to report any confirmed sightings of the moon. Individuals who observe the crescent have been requested to contact designated telephone numbers provided by the Islamic Foundation. Citizens may also notify local administrative officials, including Deputy Commissioners or Upazila Nirbahi Officers, to ensure the information is formally recorded and verified.

The outcome of the meeting will be closely watched nationwide, as it will officially mark the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
