Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has called on opposition parties to play a more constructive role by identifying both the achievements and shortcomings of the government, rather than focusing solely on criticism.
Speaking at an iftar gathering held at the Collectorate School ground in Lakshmipur on Thursday in memory of July martyrs and injured individuals, the minister said the opposition should work alongside the government in Parliament by pointing out its mistakes and offering cooperation.
He noted that the current government has been in office for only a month and urged both ruling and opposition parties to remain patient during this period.
Highlighting development initiatives, Anee said a nationwide canal excavation programme is currently underway, with work planned over 180 days. The government aims to excavate around 20,000 kilometres of canals within the next five years.
Recalling past efforts, he mentioned that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had introduced a similar initiative, which significantly boosted agricultural output and fish production, helping regions achieve self-sufficiency.
The minister said the present government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, intends to continue and expand that programme.
Several local political leaders and officials attended the event, including Lakshmipur District BNP Member Secretary and Zila Parishad Administrator Sahab Uddin Sabu, Joint Convener Advocate Hasibur Rahman, BFF Vice-President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, District Jamaat Ameer Master Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, and other leaders from BNP and its affiliated organisations.
