State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan has announced a strict decision to end the practice of passengers boarding launches from boats in the middle of rivers, aiming to improve safety and prevent overcrowding.
Speaking to journalists after inspecting conditions at Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the capital on Thursday, the state minister said the government is taking a firm stance against unsafe boarding practices.
He made it clear that no passengers will be allowed to transfer from boats to launches mid-river under any circumstances.
He emphasised that preventing overcrowding remains a top priority, and authorities will strictly enforce the new measures. Law enforcement agencies have already increased monitoring efforts to ensure discipline at terminals and along waterways.
Razib also urged passengers to follow safety guidelines and remain cautious while travelling.
Discussing future plans, he said the government is working to reform river crossing systems by introducing a more organised and permanent arrangement away from busy ghats. This is intended to reduce uncontrolled movement of boats and launches.
Addressing concerns about fares, the minister noted that no formal complaints of overcharging have been received so far.
He added that fares have already been reduced by 10 per cent to ease passenger costs. However, passengers were encouraged to report any irregularities with proper evidence.
The state minister further said that officials from the Shipping Ministry are actively monitoring services on a daily basis and maintaining direct communication with passengers to ensure improved service quality.
