At least 12 people have been killed and 20 others injured in a catastrophic collision between a passenger bus and a train in the Cumilla district of Bangladesh.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 03:00 local time overnight on Saturday in the Paduarbazar Bishworoad area, situated along the busy Dhaka-Chattogram highway.

Mainamati Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Md. Abdul Momin confirmed the casualties, stating that the deceased comprise seven men, two women, and three children. All of the victims were passengers on the bus. Authorities are currently working to formally identify those who lost their lives.

The collision involved a passenger transport bus travelling from Chapainawabganj to Noakhali and a Dhaka-bound mail train that had departed from Chattogram. According to preliminary assessments by the Railway Police, the tragic crash transpired when the bus unexpectedly drove onto the railway tracks directly into the path of the oncoming train.

Emergency responders, including the Fire Service, Railway Police, and Highway Police, were swiftly dispatched to the scene. The teams worked through the early hours to recover the bodies and transport the wounded to nearby medical facilities.

At the Cumilla Medical College Hospital, the scale of the tragedy was starkly visible. Md. Borhan Uddin, a nurse on duty in the emergency department, reported that 12 bodies were laid on the hospital floor. He noted that four passengers were formally admitted for extensive medical care, whilst approximately 15 others were discharged after receiving preliminary treatment for their injuries.

Omar Faruq, an injured passenger currently receiving treatment at the hospital, recounted the terrifying ordeal. He explained that he was asleep when a violent jolt suddenly woke him, only to find the interior of the bus completely mangled before he lost track of the subsequent event.
