Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that the government plans to introduce a special Indemnity Ordinance to provide full legal protection for participants of the July movement.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning before attending the first session of a newly formed parliamentary committee at the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the minister emphasised the government’s commitment to meeting public expectations and honouring the principles of the July Uprising.

The parliamentary committee, chaired by Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, has been tasked with reviewing 133 ordinances issued during the interim government period. Each ordinance will undergo detailed scrutiny to determine whether it should remain in effect or be repealed, taking into account the nation’s current political and social context.

“The primary aim of this review is to establish a robust legal framework aligned with present-day realities. Decisions on the future of these ordinances will largely depend on the committee’s findings,” the Home Minister said.

The review process was initiated after Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman tabled the 133 ordinances in Parliament on 12 March, the first day of its session. Under parliamentary rules, the committee has 30 working days to finalise recommendations on all ordinances.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expressed optimism that the government would complete the process promptly, ensuring that the spirit and legacy of the July Mass Uprising are fully respected and upheld.
