Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anne on Tuesday condemned past corruption in large-scale development projects and warned that such malpractice will no longer be tolerated.
Anne made the remarks while addressing a programme at the district council ground marking the assumption of office by newly appointed Lakshmipur Zila Parishad Administrator Sahabuddin Sabu.
Highlighting 17 years of alleged corruption, misrule, and incidents of enforced disappearances and killings, Anne said many mega projects were undertaken unnecessarily, with thousands of crores of taka allegedly misappropriated during the previous Awami League government.
“The government will take strict action against anyone involved in corruption, irrespective of department or political affiliation. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has a zero-tolerance policy on corruption,” he added.
Anne also noted that the current administration assumed office after long political struggles and sacrifices made by students and citizens during the July Mass Uprising.
He said the government had restored normalcy and was taking responsibility during a challenging period.
“We have taken charge at a difficult time. Overcoming these challenges will require continued effort and sacrifice,” Anne said.
The programme was chaired by newly appointed Zila Parishad Administrator and Lakshmipur District BNP Member Secretary Sahabuddin Sabu.
Among others, Lakshmipur-1 lawmaker Md Shahadat Hossain Selim, District Jamaat Ameer Master Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, Bangladesh Football Federation Vice-President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, District BNP Joint Convener Advocate Hasibur Rahman and Zila Parishad Chief Executive Officer Ashrafun Nahar spoke at the event.
Leaders and activists from BNP and its associate bodies, including Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, participated in the event from district, upazila, and municipal levels.
