Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that efforts are ongoing to bring back individuals accused in the Osman Hadi murder case who are currently in India, under an existing prisoner exchange agreement.
He made the remarks on Thursday after laying wreaths at the Rajarbagh Police Memorial, paying homage to police members who were martyred during the Liberation War, marking Independence and National Day.
Addressing journalists, the minister confirmed that Bangladesh has already initiated formal procedures through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“A request has been sent via diplomatic channels to return those accused in the Osman Hadi murder case. The process of bringing them back under the prisoner exchange agreement is now underway,” he said.
Reflecting on the historical significance of the day, Salahuddin Ahmed recalled that the first acts of violence on the night of 25 March 1971, began at Rajarbagh Police Lines.
He noted that this marked the beginning of widespread resistance, leading to the declaration of independence.
He further mentioned that Ziaur Rahman, then a major, declared revolt in Chattogram after learning about the massacre and formally announced independence on 27 March from the Kalurghat Betar, calling for global support.
The minister described this account as reflecting the “true history” of the country’s independence.
Paying tribute to the fallen, he emphasised that the Liberation War commenced with the sacrifice of police personnel at Rajarbagh, adding that their contribution would be remembered with enduring respect by the nation.
