Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed confidence on Thursday that Bangladesh is moving toward a democratic, happy and prosperous future under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Speaking to reporters after paying tribute at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Mirza Fakhrul said the people of the country remain hopeful and confident about Tarique Rahman’s vision for governance.

“Under his leadership, we believe Bangladesh will surely become democratic, happy and prosperous,” he said.

Marking the 56th Independence and National Day, the BNP secretary general extended greetings to the nation on behalf of BNP and reflected on the country’s long history of political struggle.

“Despite repression and hardships, the people continued their movement, and the July Mass Uprising created the opportunity to rebuild a democratic system,” he noted.

Fakhrul highlighted that Tarique Rahman, who led the party from abroad for years, is now working to reconstruct the country with a fresh vision after forming the government.

“In just one month, Bangladesh has already made significant progress under his leadership,” he said.

The BNP leader cited several government initiatives, including the family card programme, monthly allowances for imams and religious leaders, canal excavation schemes, and interest waivers for marginal farmers, as part of a broader effort to strengthen the nation.

Paying tribute to the country’s liberation history, Fakhrul remembered Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, who inspired citizens to join the Liberation War and led the patriotic armed forces throughout the nine-month struggle for independence.

He also honoured former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for her role in preserving democracy and extended homage to all those martyred or injured during the war.

Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman laid wreaths at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia, first as head of government and later as BNP Chairman, accompanied by senior party leaders. The leaders also participated in a munajat, praying for the departed souls of the country’s leaders and for the well-being of Bangladesh and its people.
