Bangladesh is reviewing its police uniform policy, as the government considers restoring a previous design following dissatisfaction within the force, officials said at a police academy event in Rajshahi.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said a final decision would be taken at the highest policy level, noting that many officers are not satisfied with the current uniform. He indicated that authorities may revert to a previously used and more suitable design as part of broader institutional reforms.
The remarks were made at the passing-out parade of the 43rd Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, marking the completion of one year of basic training for trainee assistant superintendents of police.
Salahuddin Ahmed emphasised that police reform remains a key government priority, with a focus on building a professional, accountable and people-orientated force. He said the government is working to modernise policing structures and revise outdated legal frameworks inherited from the colonial era.
He added that the police should function as a public service institution rather than serve any political or group interests. The reform agenda includes ensuring merit-based recruitment, postings and promotions, alongside efforts to reduce political influence.
Officials are also advancing plans for a Police Reform Commission aimed at strengthening governance, improving operational standards and enhancing institutional transparency.
The home minister highlighted a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and called on new officers to develop technical skills to address emerging digital and cyber-related crimes.
A total of 72 trainees completed the programme. Ahmed Sadman Shakib led the parade, while Md Fahim Faisal received awards for best probationer and academic performance. Other recognitions included Md Arafat Hossain for field activities, Shaon Reza for horsemanship and Bapi Kumar Das for shooting.
Following the ceremony, the newly commissioned officers will be deployed across Bangladesh for six months of field-level training.
The review of police uniform policy comes alongside wider institutional reforms, as Bangladesh seeks to modernise law enforcement and improve public trust in policing.
