Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Dilara Hafiz, a prominent educationist, who passed away in Singapore at the age of 78.
Dilara Hafiz died at Singapore General Hospital at 1:29 pm local time on Saturday while undergoing treatment, according to official statements. Her death has drawn tributes from senior political leaders, highlighting her contributions to Bangladesh’s education sector.
In a condolence message, Tarique Rahman described Dilara Hafiz as a “distinguished educationist and social worker", adding that the country has lost a respected figure in academia. He emphasised her long-standing role in expanding access to education across Bangladesh.
Dilara Hafiz was the spouse of Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad. She is survived by her husband, a son, a daughter, grandchildren and extended family members.
Throughout her career, Dilara Hafiz held several key positions in Bangladesh’s education system. She served as principal of Eden Mohila College and Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College and later as Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education under the Ministry of Education.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir also expressed condolences, recognising her contributions to national education development and extending sympathy to her family.
According to officials, her body will be brought back to Bangladesh on Sunday evening. The first funeral prayer is scheduled to take place at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad on March 30 at 11 am. A second prayer will be held at the Central Mosque in Cantonment after Zuhr prayers, followed by burial at Banani Military Graveyard.
