Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday accused the previous fascist government of committing massive corruption under the guise of development.

Speaking in Parliament, Mirza Fakhrul said, “It is deeply unfortunate that large-scale corruption occurred in the name of mega projects during the tenure of the past regime. We realised the extent of this corruption after assuming office just one month ago.”

Responding to a supplementary question from opposition lawmaker Akhter Hossen (Rangpur-4), Mirza Fakhrul highlighted those roads and streets in the northern districts remained largely neglected despite the implementation of high-profile projects.

He assured that his government would not tolerate such corruption in the future.

“InshaAllah, our administration will prioritise transparency and focus on the development of rural roads and communication networks,” he added.

Akhter Hossen had raised concerns about the poor state of rural roads, noting that local communities continued to suffer because the previous government focused on mega projects while neglecting basic infrastructure.

In response to a supplementary question from Jamaat lawmaker Md Abdul Aleem (Bagerhat-4), Mirza Fakhrul further stated that widespread nepotism and corruption had hindered the development of rural roads under the earlier regime.

The minister said many rural roads remain unpaved, but his government has already launched phased initiatives to upgrade earthen (kachha) roads.

“Steps are underway to systematically pave and improve these roads across rural areas,” Mirza Fakhrul added.
