In a rare display of cross-party cordiality, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman hosted Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman for a courtesy meeting at the Parliament Secretariat on Monday, raising hopes of a more cooperative political environment.
The brief, 20-minute discussion followed the funeral prayers of Dilara Hafiz, wife of Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, held earlier at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad complex.
After the Namaz-e-Janaza, the two leaders walked together towards the parliament building, during which Dr Shafiqur expressed his desire to meet the prime minister.
Observers noted that the Prime Minister’s gesture of accompanying the opposition leader partway upon leaving the office reflected a conscious effort to set a respectful and civil tone in parliamentary interactions.
The Prime Minister’s additional press secretary, Atikur Rahman Ruman, emphasised that such gestures are consistent with the Prime Minister’s long-standing practice of demonstrating courtesy towards political colleagues, both before the election and since the BNP came to power.
Political analysts suggest that this interaction could mark a subtle but important shift in Bangladesh’s parliamentary culture, signalling a willingness among top leaders to prioritise mutual respect over partisan friction.
The meeting also underscores the personal rapport between the prime minister and the opposition leader, which may help ease political tensions in the coming months.
With Bangladesh navigating a politically sensitive post-election period, Monday’s meeting has been interpreted as a step towards more constructive dialogue and a model for civil political engagement at the highest levels.
