The Sagar-Runi murder case investigation report has been delayed once again, with a Dhaka court setting May 7 as the new deadline, marking the 125th extension in the high-profile case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam fixed the date after the investigation officer failed to submit the report on the scheduled day, court officials said.
The case involves the 2012 killing of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, who were murdered at their rented apartment in West Rajabazar, Dhaka, in the presence of their four-year-old son.
Despite repeated extensions over more than a decade, the investigation remains incomplete, raising concerns about accountability and delays in the justice system.
Initially, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police was assigned to investigate the case before it was transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion. However, the agency failed to submit the report despite receiving 111 extensions.
In September 2024, the High Court ordered the Ministry of Home Affairs to form a high-powered task force to take over the investigation, removing the Rapid Action Battalion from the case.
Following the directive, a four-member task force was formed in October 2024 with instructions to complete the investigation within six months. However, the probe has yet to reach a conclusion.
Legal analysts say the repeated delays highlight systemic challenges in criminal investigations and underline the need for stronger institutional accountability.
The case remains one of Bangladesh’s most high-profile unresolved murder cases, continuing to draw public attention and demands for justice.
