Science and technology are central not only to economic progress but also to national security, sustainable development and overall human well-being, said Fakir Mahbub Anam on Saturday.
The Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Science and Technology minister made the remarks while inaugurating the two-day 6th Young Scientist Congress at the National Science and Technology Complex in the capital’s Agargaon.
Highlighting the government’s vision, he said Bangladesh is working towards becoming a knowledge-based and innovation-driven nation. Efforts are underway to expand STEM education, promote research commercialisation, boost investment in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), and strengthen the country’s startup ecosystem.
The congress, themed “Young Scientists for Artificial Intelligence,” has brought together young researchers from across the country to showcase their innovations and explore future opportunities in AI and related fields.
The minister expressed optimism that such initiatives would accelerate scientific advancement and inspire the next generation. He encouraged young scientists to contribute to national development through creativity and research, and urged those pursuing higher studies abroad to apply their expertise for the benefit of the country.
Speaking at the event, Science and Technology Ministry Secretary Md Anwar Hossain said the government is working on establishing a national AI institute and formulating integrated policies for data security and effective use of AI across sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education and industry.
University Grants Commission Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed noted that the world is entering a new phase of transformation driven by artificial intelligence, adding that young Bangladeshi scientists have a crucial role to play in this evolving landscape.
Organised by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, the congress includes technical sessions, research presentations, panel discussions and exhibitions, drawing participation from universities, research institutions and technology organisations nationwide.
