BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday dismissed as entirely false the assertion that his party is against reform.
Addressing a discussion marking ‘Teliapara Day’ in Habiganj, Fakhrul said, “The claim that BNP does not want reforms is baseless and intended to mislead the public. We are committed to reforms and will carry them out.”
Speaking on the Liberation War, Fakhrul emphasised the nation’s historic struggle, stating, “The Liberation War defines our identity, pride, and very existence. Attempts to undermine it are unacceptable.”
He also praised the July 2024 student-led uprising, calling it “a significant chapter of resistance against authoritarian rule” and underscoring BNP’s support for the movement.
On party discipline, Fakhrul reiterated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s guidance, saying, “Just as an empty cowshed is better than harbouring a wicked cow, BNP will not tolerate corruption or wrongdoing within its ranks.”
The minister further urged local MPs to take swift action to improve the welfare of tea workers in the region.
The event was attended by Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, State Minister Ishraque Hossain, National Parliament Whip G K Gaus, International Crimes Tribunal Prosecutor Aminul Islam, and various local officials, freedom fighters, political figures, and community leaders.
Speakers highlighted Teliapara Tea Garden’s historical significance, noting it as the site where the first organised military strategy for Bangladesh’s Liberation War was developed, including the division of operations into 11 sectors and three brigades.
