At least five people lost their lives on Saturday noon when a fire engulfed a gas lighter manufacturing factory in Dhaka’s Keraniganj Upazila.

It was known that the blaze broke out at a tin-roofed facility near Kadamtali intersection in the upazila, with emergency services receiving the first report at 1:11pm.

Firefighters from seven units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence quickly reached the scene by 1:16pm and battled the flames for more than an hour. The fire was reportedly brought under control around 2:30pm.

Anwarul Islam, a spokesperson for the Fire Service, confirmed that five bodies have been recovered from the wreckage so far.

He noted that the condition of the remains made it difficult to immediately identify the victims’ gender.

Rescue teams continued to search the debris for any additional casualties, with operations ongoing late into the afternoon.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Authorities said the factory, which specialised in producing gas lighters, is under investigation to identify what triggered the deadly blaze. Officials are expected to release further updates as the probe progresses.

Local residents and nearby workers described chaotic scenes as flames and smoke spread quickly through the facility, highlighting safety concerns at small-scale manufacturing units.
