Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed deep grief over the tragic fire that broke out at a gas lighter factory in Dhaka’s Keraniganj, resulting in the deaths of at least five people, and urged authorities to provide immediate support to victims and their families.

According to the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly, Tarique Rahman spoke with Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hussain and instructed him to ensure that all injured workers receive prompt and proper medical treatment. In addition, the Prime Minister contacted local lawmaker Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dhaka District deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, and the director general of the Fire Service and Civil Defence to coordinate emergency response efforts.

Saleh Shibly added that Tarique Rahman directed the formation of separate investigation committees to determine the cause of the fire and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“The Prime Minister is determined that lessons be learned from this incident and all measures be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” he said.

The fire erupted around 1:11pm at a tin-shed factory located near Kadamtali Gol Chattar in Keraniganj. Fire Service teams arrived within minutes, and after battling the flames for several hours, brought the fire under control at 4:44pm. Authorities are continuing recovery operations at the site, while the investigation into the exact cause of the blaze is ongoing.
