Bangladesh has reported a significant rise in measles infections, with 787 new suspected cases and four deaths recorded in the last 24 hours till Saturday, according to health authorities.
Data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday showed that between 8am on Friday and 8am on Saturday, 60 cases were laboratory-confirmed as measles, while two confirmed deaths were reported during the same period.
In addition, the authorities recorded a much higher number of suspected infections, highlighting the ongoing spread of the disease across the country.
The DGHS said that from 15 March to 4 April, the total number of confirmed measles cases has reached 826. During the same period, suspected cases have climbed to 6,476, indicating a widening outbreak that continues to put pressure on the healthcare system.
Fatalities have also increased, with 16 deaths confirmed from measles and a further 98 deaths reported among suspected cases since mid-March.
Despite the surge in infections, recovery numbers have also shown progress. According to the DGHS, a total of 2,654 patients recovered from the disease between 15 March and 3 April.
Health experts have stressed the importance of vaccination and early treatment to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life, particularly among vulnerable groups such as young children.
