Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday stressed that religion should never be used as a tool for political division in Bangladesh.
Speaking as the chief guest at an Easter Sunday greeting exchange ceremony for the Christian community in Bhatara, Mirza Fakhrul called for society to rise above hatred and division.
“We must build a Bangladesh founded on love, brotherhood and mutual respect,” he said.
He warned against political forces attempting to exploit religion for their own agendas, noting that such efforts undermine the spirit of the Liberation War.
“Certain forces are trying to create divisions and spread hatred. It is time to permanently remove the word ‘hatred’ from our society,” he added.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s diverse religious fabric, Fakhrul said, “While Bangladesh embraces Islam, followers of Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism are also an integral part of this land. True progress requires taking everyone along.”
He greeted the Christian community for their support and emphasized the importance of collective cooperation in building a prosperous nation.
Addressing the ongoing fuel crisis, Fakhrul acknowledged the government’s efforts to import fuel despite global disruptions.
He also criticised panic buying, pointing out that some people are repeatedly refuelling motorcycles even when official stockpiles are sufficient.
Concluding his remarks, Fakhrul thanked the Christian community for their role in the BNP’s electoral victory under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and vowed to continue governance guided by truth and inclusivity.
