Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury on Sunday announced that this year’s Bengali New Year celebrations on Pahela Baishakh will include a grand procession officially named ‘Baishakhi Shobhajatra’.

The announcement was made during a press briefing at the minister’s office in the Secretariat.

Earlier in the day, Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury held a meeting at the Secretariat to finalise preparations for the New Year festivities, which also include celebrations observed by ethnic communities such as the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Garo and other minority groups across the country.

Addressing concerns regarding the naming of the procession, the minister said, “There has been some discussion over whether the procession’s name should emphasise joy, prosperity, or other values, but such debates are unnecessary. Our aim is to celebrate unity in diversity rather than create division.”

He added, “Through this initiative, we want people from all communities to come together and participate in a shared cultural experience. In this context, the government has decided that the New Year procession on Pahela Baishakh will officially be called ‘Baishakhi Shobhajatra’, and this name will continue to be used in the years to come.”

Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury also reassured the public that the decision will not affect the procession’s UNESCO recognition, highlighting that Bangladesh remains committed to preserving its intangible cultural heritage. The event is expected to attract thousands of participants and spectators, showcasing the country’s rich traditions, artistry and spirit of inclusivity.
