The Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday passed a landmark bill setting the maximum age for direct recruitment to government positions and public sector organisations at 32 years.

This marks the first piece of legislation passed by the 13th Parliament.

The bill, titled “Maximum Age Limit for Direct Appointment in Government, Autonomous, Statutory Government Authorities, Public Non-Financial Corporations and Self-Governing Bodies Act, 2026,” was presented by State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari.

It stipulates that, in response to demands for increasing the entry age into government service, the maximum age for direct recruitment will now be 32 years. Previously, some recruitment rules allowed entry ages of 33, 35, 40, or 45 years. With the new law, the maximum age across all government appointments has been standardised to 32 years.

The legislation emphasises that raising the age limit will create more opportunities for educated youth, reduce unemployment, and enable young professionals to contribute to national development. The move is also expected to have positive effects on the labour market and broader economy.

The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), as a constitutional body, has already been issuing recruitment circulars for the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) incorporating the new maximum age of 32. The bill was passed by a voice vote after its introduction in Parliament.

State Minister Md Abdul Bari highlighted that formalising the ordinance into law was essential to ensure uniformity and transparency in government recruitment processes.
