Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday urged the Speaker to allow a comprehensive discussion in Parliament on 133 ordinances, arguing that many of those proposed to lapse are significant and tied to what he described as the “July Spirit.”

Raising the issue before the second item on the day’s agenda during the first session of the National Parliament, Dr Shafiqur Rahman noted that a special committee had earlier been formed to review the ordinances and that its report had already received the Speaker’s approval.

He said the report includes recommendations to let certain ordinances lapse, but stressed that several of these are of considerable importance and should not be dismissed without proper debate.

The Jamaat-e-Islami ameer pointed out that, after comparing the current list with earlier notices, the opposition found that key ordinances linked to reform initiatives were among those set to lapse.

He called on the Speaker to ensure that lawmakers are given the opportunity to discuss them in detail.

Referring to the day’s supplementary agenda, which included two bills, Dr Shafiqur Rahman suggested that these might be connected to the ordinances and urged Parliament to formally take up the matter.

In response, the law minister initially said the two bills were new and unrelated to the ordinances.

However, after the Asr prayer break, he corrected his statement, acknowledging that the bills were indeed part of the 133 ordinances under review.

He assured the House that each ordinance would be placed before Parliament and discussed during the legislative process. The Speaker, meanwhile, noted that around 93 bills need to be passed by 9 April, with further discussions to follow.
