Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Sunday highlighted the expanding influence of mass and social media, noting that these platforms play a critical role in shaping public perception and mindset in today’s world.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of six short-term courses at the Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute, the minister said that ensuring ethical use of these powerful communication tools has become one of the most pressing challenges of modern times.

“People are naturally inclined to listen, understand and believe what they are told. This creates an opportunity for influential voices to shape public thinking,” he said. “While this can have positive outcomes, there is also a risk of misuse if ethical standards are not maintained.”

Swapon emphasised that professionals working in media, film, and other creative sectors carry a significant responsibility.

He warned that without adherence to ethics and professionalism, these platforms could negatively impact society.

Highlighting the power of cinema, the minister said films have the ability to deeply influence emotions and perspectives, making them a vital medium for communication.

He urged creators to use this influence responsibly for the betterment of society and humanity.

He also noted that the government is taking steps to modernise and expand creative and training institutions to enhance their effectiveness.

Addressing course participants, he stressed the importance of balancing technical skills with strong ethical values and a sense of responsibility.

Following the programme, the minister formally inaugurated the courses and expressed his appreciation to all those involved.

The event was chaired by Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute CEO Abu Kalam Mohammad Shamsuddin, with several senior media and academic figures also in attendance.
