Indian envoy meets PM in Dhaka, seeks stronger Bangladesh–India ties

Bangladesh–India relations were reaffirmed on Monday as Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka, with both sides discussing a broad range of bilateral cooperation priorities.

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Division office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony confirmed.

During the meeting, Pranay Verma reiterated India’s intention to work closely with the government and the people of Bangladesh in a positive, constructive and forward-looking manner, based on mutual interest and mutual benefit, according to a statement from the Indian High Commission.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral engagement with particular attention to people-centric cooperation across multiple sectors aligned with the development priorities of both countries.

A wide range of areas were covered, including public health, financial inclusion, women’s empowerment, rural development, bilateral trade and investment, ease of doing business and technology partnerships. Power and energy cooperation also featured in the talks as part of ongoing collaboration between the two neighbours.

Pranay Verma emphasised that Bangladesh–India cooperation should translate geographical proximity into practical opportunities by strengthening economic and connectivity linkages. He also highlighted the importance of expanding cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges to deepen the relationship further.

The meeting reflects continued diplomatic engagement between Dhaka and New Delhi, with both sides maintaining focus on cooperation that supports economic growth and regional stability.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe were among those present at the meeting.
