The Election Commission (EC) has finalised the schedule for election to the women’s reserved seats in the 13th National Parliament. Voting for these seats will take place on 12 May.

Senior Secretary of the EC Akhtar Ahmed announced the decision to reporters at the Election Building in the capital’s Agargaon on Monday.

He said the official election schedule will be made public on 8 April. Along with the schedule, the EC will release detailed timelines for the submission, scrutiny, and withdrawal of nomination papers.

A total of 50 reserved seats for women are distributed among political parties proportionally, based on the number of seats they secured in the 300 general constituencies during the 12 February general election. Political parties will nominate candidates according to their allocated seats.

Since only elected Members of Parliament participate as voters in this election, candidates often face little competition. In many cases, a nominee is elected unopposed if only one candidate is nominated for a reserved seat.

The reserved seats system is designed to ensure women’s representation in Parliament, providing an opportunity for female leaders to participate in the country’s legislative process.

The upcoming election on 12 May is expected to formalise nominations and confirm representatives from the major political parties, further strengthening women’s presence in the legislative body.
