Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury's arrest in Dhaka has emerged as a major political development after the former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad was detained by law enforcement authorities on Monday night.
A team from the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury from her residence in the Dhanmondi area of the capital. The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam.
Officials said she is currently in Detective Branch custody in connection with a case, although details regarding the nature of the case were not immediately disclosed.
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury served as Speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad from April 2013 until September 2023, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She was also elected as a Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.
