Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman held a high-level meeting with his Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple areas.
According to a Facebook post by Jaishankar, the two diplomats exchanged views on ways to enhance collaboration in trade, energy, regional security and other strategic sectors.
“We also exchanged views on regional and global developments, and agreed to remain in close touch,” he noted, highlighting the mutual commitment to maintaining steady communication channels between the two countries.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India M Riaz Hamidullah, reflecting the significance of the discussions.
This visit marks the first high-level engagement with India since the BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, assumed office. Relations between Dhaka and Delhi had experienced a period of strain prior to the change in administration, making this meeting an important step toward restoring trust and cooperation.
Dr Khalilur Rahman arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday and is scheduled to meet with other Indian ministers on Wednesday, including Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Observers say these meetings aim to deepen energy and trade ties, address mutual concerns, and explore opportunities for long-term partnership between Bangladesh and India.
Both sides have expressed optimism that the discussions will pave the way for stronger diplomatic, economic and strategic cooperation in the months ahead, signalling a positive shift in regional relations.
