A Bangladeshi man was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Patgram border in Lalmonirhat early Wednesday, after which his body was taken across the border.

The deceased has been identified as Ali Hossain, 49, son of late Abdul Gafur, hailing from East Paniartari Village in Dhabalguri of Patgram Upazila.

According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local sources, gunfire was heard in two separate incidents around 2:50am and 4:50am.

The BSF claimed that its personnel fired “precautionary shots” when a group of 7 to 8 Bangladeshis allegedly attempted to cut the border fence and cross into India.

Ali Hossain reportedly sustained gunshot injuries during a scuffle and was immediately taken by the BSF to a hospital on the Indian side, where he was declared dead by doctors.

Lt Col Syed Fazle Munim, commanding officer of Teesta Battalion-61 BGB, said authorities are preparing to hold a flag meeting at both battalion and sector commander levels to address the incident.

He confirmed that BGB will lodge a strong protest with the Indian authorities and demand the prompt return of Ali Hossain’s body.

The fatal shooting has sparked shock, anger and grief among residents of the border area. Local communities expressed concern over escalating tension and urged both sides to maintain restraint.

This incident marks a serious development along the Bangladesh-India border, which has seen intermittent clashes and security concerns in recent years. Border authorities from both nations are expected to discuss measures to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of residents living near the boundary.
