Telecommunications authorities have announced a potential nationwide Bangladesh internet disruption expected to last for three days, beginning on Thursday. The partial outage is the direct result of scheduled infrastructure maintenance on the secondary national submarine cable system.

Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) confirmed on Wednesday that the maintenance operation will affect the SEA-ME-WE-5 (SMW5) cable, which interfaces with the national grid at the Kuakata landing station. The engineering intervention, officially designated by the consortium as an 'S.1.5.1 Shunt Fault Repair', necessitates the temporary suspension of all circuits connecting the national network to Singapore.

The infrastructure maintenance is scheduled to commence at 22:00 local time on Thursday and will continue until 06:00 on 13 April. During this operational window, commercial and residential internet users across the country may experience reduced bandwidth speeds and intermittent service disruptions.

To mitigate the impact on the digital economy and national communications, BSCPLC stated that core internet traffic will be systematically rerouted. National connectivity will be sustained through the primary submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE-4 (SMW4), which operates from the Cox’s Bazar landing station.

The state-run telecommunications entity stated that it is coordinating closely with its international consortium partners to complete the fault repair within the designated timeframe. Officials aim to restore optimal network capacity as swiftly as possible to minimise the operational impact on the national digital infrastructure.
