Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including labour migration, trade, and education cooperation.
The minister was accompanied by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Adviser Mahdi Amin and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Malaysia during the meeting.
At the beginning of the talks, Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on assuming office and praised Bangladesh’s continued progress alongside its enduring democratic journey.
Mahdi Amin conveyed the Bangladeshi premier’s greetings and handed over a personal letter to the Malaysian leader.
During the meeting, both sides engaged in detailed discussions on labour-related matters, with a particular focus on ensuring a fair, transparent and accountable recruitment system.
They emphasised the importance of safeguarding migrant workers from exploitation and improving overall governance in labour migration processes.
The two leaders also explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties, expressing mutual interest in expanding economic cooperation for shared growth.
In addition, the discussions covered potential collaboration in the education sector. Both sides showed interest in enhancing academic exchanges, including partnerships between institutions and the exchange of teachers, to deepen people-to-people connections.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim extended an invitation to his Bangladeshi counterpart to visit Malaysia at a convenient time, aiming to further reinforce high-level engagement between the two countries.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing satisfaction over the steady progress in bilateral relations and reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors in the future.
