An Australian parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker of House of Representatives Milton Dick, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Prime Minister’s office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday afternoon.
The 13-member delegation, representing various committees and interests within the Australian Parliament, met with the premier to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss avenues for enhanced cooperation between the two countries.
According to the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly the meeting was a formal courtesy call aimed at promoting mutual understanding and dialogue.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on parliamentary practices, legislative priorities and potential collaboration in areas such as trade, education and climate change.
The Australian delegation expressed interest in learning from Bangladesh’s parliamentary system, while Prime Minister Tarique Rahman highlighted ongoing development initiatives and emphasised the importance of sustained cooperation between the two nations.
Jatiya Sangsad Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam were present during the meeting, representing the host parliament and facilitating discussions on parliamentary diplomacy.
The visit underlines the growing relationship between Bangladesh and Australia at the parliamentary level, complementing broader diplomatic and economic ties. The delegation’s engagement included discussions on legislative collaboration, parliamentary capacity building and exploring opportunities for joint programs that benefit both countries.
The courtesy call concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting cooperation across political, economic and cultural spheres.
