Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit Jashore on 27 April to inaugurate the re-excavation of the historic Ulasi–Jadunathpur canal in Sharsha Upazila, a project closely linked to the legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
The daylong visit will also include several development-related activities, generating excitement among local residents, district leaders, and party activists.
This marks Tarique Rahman’s first visit to Jashore as Prime Minister following the 13th National Election and his second visit to the district within three months. Earlier, on 2 February, he addressed a massive rally at Jashore Upashahar Degree College ground.
Jashore Zila Parishad Administrator and District BNP General Secretary Delwar Hossain Khokon confirmed the visit, noting that preparatory meetings involving local administration and party officials will be held ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources and Jashore-3 MP Aninda Islam Amit is also expected to attend.
According to the schedule, the Prime Minister will arrive by air at 10am, inaugurate the canal re-excavation programme, lay the foundation stone for a 500-bed Jashore Medical College Hospital, address a rally at Jashore Eidgah Maidan, and return to Dhaka in the evening.
The Ulasi–Jadunathpur canal, the centrepiece of the historic ‘Ulasi Model’ initiated by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in 1976, transformed local agriculture by enabling irrigation across 22,000 acres and promoting Boro cultivation. Residents recall the late President personally participating in excavation work, symbolising grassroots participation and national unity.
Over the years, the canal has silted and deteriorated, prompting the government to restore it to ease water-logging, support fisheries, and revive the rural economy.
State Minister Amit emphasised that the project, along with the medical college hospital, fulfils key electoral commitments, while locals hope the initiative will strengthen national food security and regional development.
