Members of the treasury bench in Parliament on Thursday said the July 2024 Mass Uprising was the culmination of a prolonged political movement led by BNP over the past 17 years.
Participating in the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s speech, lawmakers observed that while the July movement involved students and the general public, its foundation had been built through years of political struggle.
The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal.
Ruling party MP Mahbubur Rahman (Mymensingh-7) said the BNP’s sustained struggle created the conditions for the mass uprising.
He alleged that the previous government had pursued authoritarian practices and suppressed opposition leaders and activists, which ultimately led to widespread public resistance.
He credited BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership for the movement’s success and paid tribute to those killed during the movement.
During the discussion, treasury bench lawmakers also praised the President’s speech, particularly for acknowledging Begum Khaleda Zia’s role in establishing parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh.
The current parliament’s first session began on 12 March with President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s address. The Business Advisory Committee allocated 50 hours for debate on the speech, with Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam placing the Motion of Thanks, seconded by Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu.
Lawmakers highlighted various government initiatives under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, including reforms in health, education, sports and manpower sectors. They noted efforts to introduce public-private partnerships in healthcare and improve the quality of education.
Another MP, Said Ahmed (Shariatpur-1), urged greater focus on the development of his constituency, claiming it had been neglected in the past.
The session concluded with tributes to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and the martyrs of both the 1971 Liberation War and the July 2024 Uprising.
