Candidates backed by the BNP emerged victorious in the by-elections held in Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 constituencies on Thursday, according to official results announced by returning officers.

In Sherpur-3, Returning Officer Md Jahangir Hossain declared Mahmudul Haque Rubel as the winner following the completion of vote counting. He secured 1,66,007 votes from 128 polling centres. His closest competitor, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Masudur Rahman, received 47,051 votes, trailing by a margin of 1,18,966 votes. Bangladesh Socialist Party (Marxist) candidate Mizanur Rahman bagged 480 votes.

Election officials said polling was largely peaceful, although a few incidents of irregularities were reported and addressed promptly. The overall voter turnout in the constituency stood at 50.52 per cent.

However, Masudur Rahman withdrew from the race earlier in the afternoon, alleging intimidation of polling agents and attacks on party activists.

He also claimed that vote rigging took place in several centres with limited response from law enforcement agencies.

In Bogura-6, Returning Officer Fazlur Karim announced Rezaul Karim Badsha as the winner. He received 1,33,215 votes across 150 polling centres, while his nearest rival, Jamaat-backed candidate Abidur Rahman Sohel, secured 56,904 votes. Officials described the voting process as peaceful and orderly.

Despite this, Sohel alleged widespread irregularities during the polling process.

The Bogura-6 seat became vacant after Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, who had initially won the constituency in the 12 February general election, later chose to retain the Dhaka-17 seat instead.
