The National Parliament on Friday passed a significant piece of legislation aimed at ensuring support for those affected by the July Uprising, adopting the “Welfare and Rehabilitation of Families of Martyrs and Fighters of the July Uprising Bill, 2026” through a voice vote.
The bill was placed before the House by Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan during the afternoon sitting.
While presenting the proposal, the minister said the legislation has been designed to provide comprehensive welfare and rehabilitation support to the families of those who lost their lives during the July Uprising, as well as to individuals who actively participated in the movement.
He noted that the initiative is not only intended to extend financial and social assistance but also to uphold and institutionalise the spirit and values of the July Uprising in the country’s national life.
The minister further emphasised the importance of preserving the historical significance of the uprising for future generations through formal recognition and state-backed measures.
Following the discussion, Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal placed the bill before the House, where it was approved unanimously by voice vote without any opposition.
The passage of the bill came as part of a broader legislative effort by Parliament, which saw around 20 bills approved across two sessions on the same day. Most of these were aimed at converting ordinances issued during the interim government into full-fledged laws.
Lawmakers described the move as a step towards formalising key policy decisions while addressing the needs of those who played a role in the July Uprising.
