Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has underscored the importance of unity within Bangladesh’s armed forces, saying their cohesion is vital to safeguarding Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.
Speaking at a programme held at the Darbar Hall of Dhaka Cantonment on Sunday, the Prime Minister said a united military serves as a strong pillar of national strength and stability.
He noted that the armed forces must remain above political divisions and continue to uphold their constitutional duties to protect the nation.
Highlighting the legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the Prime Minister said the spirit of patriotism instilled in the armed forces during his time should be preserved and carried forward.
He reiterated that the military does not belong to any persons, parties or groups, but exists solely for the defence of the country.
Tarique Rahman also outlined the government’s broader reform agenda, saying efforts are underway to implement structural changes across sectors in line with the July Charter.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring these reforms are executed as promised.
Referring to past challenges, he mentioned that the armed forces had faced setbacks, including the impact of the Pilkhana incident, but have continued to play a constructive role in national affairs. He praised their contribution in maintaining stability during periods of political uncertainty, including the 2024 July Uprising and its aftermath.
The Prime Minister further commended the role of the armed forces in supporting a free and fair election earlier this year, as well as in keeping key sectors such as industry, ports and urban services functioning during difficult times.
