Two newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) from Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 constituencies were sworn in on Sunday as members of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad administered the oath to Mahmudul Haque Rubel and Rezaul Karim Badsha at his office in the Sangsad Bhaban around noon. Following the ceremony, the lawmakers signed the oath register in line with parliamentary procedures.
Several senior government officials were present at the programme, including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam and other whips.
The by-elections in Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 were held on 9 April. The Sherpur-3 voting had earlier been postponed due to the death of a candidate, while the Bogura-6 seat fell vacant after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who had been elected from both Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6, chose to retain the Dhaka constituency.
The Election Commission published the official gazette of the two newly elected MPs on Saturday, paving the way for their oath-taking.
Earlier, on 17 February, lawmakers elected from 297 constituencies had taken oath. With the addition of the two MPs, the total number of sworn-in members now stands at 298.
The results of Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 constituencies are yet to be declared due to pending court cases related to candidacy. Officials said the results will be announced once the legal issues are resolved.
