Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Sunday underscored the need to ensure both the free flow of information and protection against misinformation, describing the two as equally important priorities for the government.

He made the remarks while speaking at a view-exchange meeting with members of the core group of the Right to Information Forum at the Secretariat.

The minister said that while the government remains committed to upholding citizens’ right to information, the growing spread of misinformation and disinformation poses a serious challenge that must be addressed alongside ensuring access to information.

Highlighting the issue of accountability, he noted that simply expanding information access would not be sufficient without proper safeguards to verify and manage the quality of information being disseminated.

Referring to the suspension of the Right to Information (Amendment) Ordinance in parliament, Swapon said the decision was taken for specific reasons, adding that a more effective and inclusive legal framework would be developed through consultations with stakeholders.

He stressed the importance of incorporating expert opinions to strengthen the Right to Information Act and ensure its proper implementation.

The minister also emphasised the need for fact-checking mechanisms and screening processes to prevent the spread of false or misleading content.

Zahir Uddin Swapon further said protecting the institutional integrity of the Information Commission would be a key consideration in any future amendments.

Calling for collaborative efforts, he invited participants to provide constructive recommendations for reforming the law, assuring that all stakeholders would be involved in the process.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yeaser Khan Choudhury, along with representatives from civil society and relevant organisations, also attended the meeting and shared their views on enhancing transparency and ensuring responsible information flow.
