Iran’s ambassador to Bangladesh Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi has assured that the Bangladeshi vessels currently waiting in the Strait of Hormuz will be allowed to pass through the strategic waterway “very soon”, following ongoing diplomatic discussions with Dhaka.
He made the remarks on Sunday while attending a condolence rally and anti-war crime exhibition organised by the Revolutionary Students’ Council at Dhaka University’s Bottala.
Addressing concerns over maritime disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the ambassador acknowledged that several ships, including some from Bangladesh, are currently stuck in the region.
“Many vessels are waiting in the Strait of Hormuz due to the war situation. Some Bangladeshi ships are also stranded,” he said. “We will cooperate with Bangladesh and arrange for their passage. God willing, they will be able to cross the Strait very soon. We will take necessary steps after discussions with the Bangladesh government.”
He further said Iran views its relationship with Bangladesh positively, describing the country as a “brotherly nation” and stressing that there is no hostility between the two sides.
“We have good relations with Bangladesh. We consider Bangladesh a brotherly country. We have no enmity with Bangladesh,” he added.
On ongoing Pakistan-mediated discussions between Iran and the United States in Islamabad, the envoy thanked regional mediators, including Pakistan and Oman, for facilitating dialogue efforts.
He also reiterated Tehran’s position that negotiations depend on “dignified terms”, while warning that Iran would respond if the ceasefire is violated.
During the event, speakers and participants expressed solidarity with victims of conflict and condemned attacks on civilians, particularly children and educational institutions, through symbolic demonstrations and an anti-war campaign at the venue.
