A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to former Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in a case filed over an alleged attempted murder during the 2024 July Uprising.

Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the bail order after she executed a bond of Tk 50,000, taking into account her physical condition, according to Public Prosecutor M Omar Faruq Faruqi.

Court officials said there is currently no legal obstacle to her release, as she has not been shown arrested in any other cases.

Earlier, on 7 April, the same court had ordered her to be sent to jail after her arrest in connection with the case.

As per the case details, the incident relates to a shooting on 18 July 2024 in Azampur Bus Stand area of Uttara, where Ashraful alias Fahim sustained bullet injuries to his left eye.

The unrest was part of the broader July uprising movement, which eventually culminated in the political changeover on 5 August 2024.

Following the incident, Ashraful filed a case naming 25 individuals, including Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, along with 120 unidentified accused.

The case alleges their involvement in the violent events during the uprising period.

Dr Shirin Sharmin later stepped down from her position on 2 September 2024, after the change in political circumstances following the fall of the Awami League government.
