Measles-related deaths rise as seven more die in a single day: DGHS

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has reported a significant escalation in Bangladesh’s ongoing measles outbreak, with seven additional fatalities recorded in the 24-hour window ending Monday morning. This latest surge brings the total death toll associated with measles and related symptoms to 156, underscoring a mounting challenge for the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.

Of the most recent victims, two were clinically confirmed to have been suffering from measles. The scale of the contagion is becoming increasingly apparent in hospital wards across the country, with 1,371 new suspected cases identified during the same period. To date, the total number of hospitalised patients has surpassed 10,900, placing considerable strain on medical facilities.

Regional concentration and recovery rates

The Dhaka division remains the primary focal point of the epidemic. In the last 24 hours, the capital region recorded the highest frequency of fatalities, with four deaths occurring in Dhaka district alone. This regional concentration has prompted health officials to monitor the capital’s high-density areas more closely as the virus continues to circulate.

Despite the rising mortality rate, there are signs of successful clinical management. According to DGHS figures, 8,369 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from medical care so far. However, the gap between hospital admissions and discharges remains a point of concern for health policy experts.

Official data and institutional response

While the total death toll including suspected cases has reached 156, the DGHS has officially verified 30 confirmed measles deaths during the period between March 15 and April 13. The discrepancy between suspected and confirmed figures highlights the complexities of rapid diagnostic testing during an active outbreak.

As the government moves to contain the spread, the focus has shifted toward aggressive immunisation drives and public awareness campaigns. With over 700 patients admitted to hospitals in a single day, the priority remains expanding bed capacity and ensuring the availability of supportive treatments to prevent further loss of life in the coming weeks.

The situation remains fluid, with health authorities expected to release updated safety protocols as the total number of suspected cases continues its upward trajectory.
