Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday launched the Farmers’ Card scheme, aiming to strengthen rural livelihoods and ensure direct support to agricultural communities.
The pre-pilot programme was inaugurated at Shaheed Maruf Stadium in Tangail on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh, marking the beginning of what the government describes as a major step towards making farmers economically self-reliant.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said agriculture remains at the heart of Bangladesh’s economy, and improving farmers’ conditions is essential for overall national development.
“If farmers can live well, the entire country will prosper,” he said, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring financial security for those involved in agriculture.
Under the scheme, farmers will receive a debit card linked to a bank account, enabling them to access multiple services directly. These include subsidies, agricultural inputs at fair prices, irrigation support, low-interest loans, training, crop advice, insurance and weather updates.
As part of the launch, Tk2,500 was disbursed to each of 22,067 farmers across 11 upazilas through mobile banking. In Tangail alone, over 1,400 farmers received the financial support.
The Prime Minister formally introduced the programme by activating it digitally and later handed over cards and saplings to selected farmers.
Officials said the initiative will also cover individuals engaged in fisheries, livestock and salt production, reflecting a broader approach to rural economic support.
The event, attended by thousands of farmers, created a festive atmosphere as people gathered to celebrate both the Bangla New Year and the new government initiative.
Authorities expect the Farmers’ Card programme to modernise agriculture and improve farmers’ access to essential services, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic growth.
