Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said the government is set to launch a special nationwide drive against drug trafficking as part of intensified efforts to tackle the growing menace.
Speaking at the Farmers’ Card distribution programme at Teknaf Ezahar Government Girls High School in Cox's Bazar, he described drug abuse as a serious national challenge requiring a stronger and more coordinated response.
He said law enforcement agencies are being prepared for the upcoming drive, which aims to curb both supply and distribution of narcotics across the country.
The minister also raised concerns over the rise of gambling, including online betting, calling it an emerging social problem. He said the government is examining effective measures to address the issue.
On human trafficking, he identified Teknaf, Ukhiya and surrounding areas as particularly vulnerable, noting that security agencies have already been directed to maintain strict surveillance and carry out coordinated operations.
Emphasising the role of citizens, the home minister urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by sharing information and raising awareness to combat crime effectively.
Earlier, a virtual programme was held to launch Farmers’ Card distribution across 11 upazilas in 10 districts in the country. Following the inauguration, the minister handed over cards to 1,698 farmers in Teknaf.
Local lawmakers and senior officials from the administration and police were present at the event.
