Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has told the Jatiya Sangsad that a new five-year primary education programme will begin on 1 July, alongside efforts to strengthen the country’s tourism sector through a long-term master plan.
“The five-year term Fifth Primary Education Development Programme is going to begin from July 1 next. Under this programme, there is a plan to provide English training to the remaining teachers,” Tarique Rahman said while responding to a starred question from treasury bench member Humam Quader Chowdhury during a parliamentary session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
Tarique Rahman said there are currently 376,489 teachers in primary schools across Bangladesh, adding that 130,000 of them have already received English training under the ongoing Fourth Primary Education Development Programme. Tarique Rahman said the government’s election manifesto prioritises bringing all primary school teachers into special training programmes to improve teaching standards nationwide.
In a separate response to another starred question, Tarique Rahman told parliament that the government is also working to develop Bangladesh’s tourism sector in a sustainable and planned manner, with the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry formulating a National Tourism Master Plan.
Responding to a question from treasury bench member ABM Mosharrof Hossain, Tarique Rahman said special emphasis is being placed on preserving the natural beauty of Kuakata while advancing tourism development under the proposed plan.
Tarique Rahman said a feasibility study is currently underway for a project titled Development of Basic Facilities at Kuakata in Patuakhali District and Patenga Anwara Sea Beach in Chattogram District, aimed at improving infrastructure and visitor access.
Tarique Rahman added that the Housing and Public Works Ministry is preparing an Action Area Plan to implement the Payra Kuakata Comprehensive Plan focusing on ecotourism, which will cover seven upazilas adjacent to Kuakata, including Galachipa, Kalapara, Rangabali, Barguna Sadar, Patharghata, Amtali and Taltali.
Noting that the tourism component of the Action Area Plan will be implemented by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Tarique Rahman expressed hope that once finalised, the plan will accelerate the overall development of the tourism sector in Kuakata under Kalapara upazila.
