She made the remarks while responding to a scripted question from ruling party lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury in the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday.

Afroza Khanam said several key steps have already been completed to enable the start of international operations, including obtaining certification from the International Civil Aviation Organization after ensuring compliance with international rules, regulations and operational requirements.

She said the runway at Cox’s Bazar Airport has been extended from 9,000 feet to 10,700 feet towards the sea to allow safe landing and takeoff of wide-body aircraft at full load while also increasing overall operational capacity.

The minister added that a new international terminal building covering 17,955 square metres has been constructed to support international flight operations. She said the facility is equipped with all necessary operational systems and is currently undergoing testing and commissioning.

Afroza Khanam said it would take a few more months to complete the remaining procedures before the airport can be fully opened for international flights.
