Eight deaths in 24 hours as measles outbreak worsens

Eight more people have died with measles and measles like symptoms across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Thursday morning as the outbreak continues to spread nationwide, according to health authorities.

The Directorate General of Health Services said that two of the latest deaths were from laboratory confirmed measles, while the remaining cases involved patients showing symptoms consistent with the disease.

With the latest figures, confirmed measles deaths have reached 34 since 15 March, while the total number of confirmed cases has risen to 3,065 over the same period. Health officials said they have been tracking measles related data since that date.

During the same 24-hour period, 1,191 patients with measles like symptoms were admitted to hospitals across the country, of whom 92 cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.

Authorities said at least 34 children have died from confirmed measles infections so far this year, while a further 172 children have died with symptoms linked to the disease.

Data from the Directorate General of Health Services shows that between 15 March and 16 April, a total of 3,065 measles cases were confirmed through laboratory testing, up from 2,721 cases recorded by 13 April, indicating a rapid rise in infections.

According to the latest health bulletin, 20,352 suspected measles cases have been identified nationwide. Of these, 10,496 patients have been discharged after receiving treatment, while the outbreak continues to put pressure on the healthcare system.
